Cleaning Shower Door Glass

Nothing ruins the beauty of a set of glass shower doors like a coating of hazy hard water deposits and soap scum. If you have ever tried to remove this build up using ammonia-based window cleaners, you know how little of the residue it removes. No matter how hard you rub, you will only get your shower glass clean using a razor or knife along with a special mix of common household chemicals.
The hazy, white deposits that plague your glass shower doors are caused by hard water. It contains certain minerals that adhere to the surface of glass and build up after repeated showering. The best way to remove it is to use a paste consisting of distilled vinegar, liquid detergent and baking soda.
You can make this cleanser by mixing one-quarter of a cup of baking soda and one tablespoon of liquid detergent with just enough distilled vinegar to make a thick paste.
Before you begin cleaning, turn on your bathroom fan or open the window for ventilation. Dip a copper scouring pad into the mixture, and use a circular motion to scrub the glass. When you are done scrubbing, use more distilled vinegar to rinse the mixture off.
Sometime a residual, wax-like film can remain after the minerals have been removed. This is soap scum. It is often thickest where the glass meets the glass door frame or handles. Apply some distilled vinegar to the glass doors using a spray bottle. Allow the vinegar to soften the soap scum for about five minutes. After this time, spray the doors again, and start scraping it off using a safety razor or a small kitchen knife. It is best to reapply the distilled vinegar spray as you work and to start from the top of the glass and work down. After you are done, use water to rinse off the doors.
